Life is a struggle for many people in Japan today; they often live in cramped, exorbitantly expensive housing and are exploited by a toxic corporate culture—facing practices such as having to cover their own expenses while on sick leave and being forced to work unpaid overtime without complaint. It has even become a common sight to see business men slumped over in exhaustion on the street or on public transport. If there is anything praiseworthy about the Japanese economy, it is arguably the food; yet even then, the prices of many everyday staples—such as beef and milk—remain very high.
